Preparing for Your MRI Scan
How Do I Prepare for an MRI?
Most MRI scans require minimal preparation, but a few steps help ensure your scan is safe and accurate.
Before your appointment
- Bring your referral, Medicare card, and any previous imaging.
- Arrive 10 minutes early to complete a safety questionnaire.
- Wear comfortable clothing without metal zips, buttons, or fasteners.
- Avoid:
- Jewellery or piercings
- Watches or fitness trackers
- Hairpins or clips
- Heavy makeup containing metallic particles
- Magnetic eyelashes
If you have implants or medical devices
Please inform our staff before your appointment if you have:
- Pacemakers or defibrillators
- Cochlear implants
- Aneurysm clips
- Metal fragments in the eye
- Neurostimulators
- Joint replacements or surgical plates
Some devices are MRI‑safe, others are not — our team will guide you.
What to Expect During Your MRI
Before the scan
- Our technologist will explain the procedure and answer any questions.
- You may be asked to change into a gown.
- You’ll lie comfortably on the MRI table, which slides into the scanner.
During the scan
- The scanner makes tapping and humming sounds — this is normal.
- You’ll be given ear protection and may listen to music.
- You must lie still to ensure clear images.
- The technologist will monitor you throughout and can communicate with you at any time.
How long does it take?
Most scans take 15–30 minutes, depending on the area being imaged.
What If I Feel Claustrophobic?
We understand that some patients feel anxious about MRI scans. Our Siemens MAGNETOM Flow Elite is designed to reduce this:
- Wide‑bore opening for a more spacious feel
- Shorter scan times
- Quiet technology to reduce noise
- Continuous communication with the technologist
- A call button is available at all times
What Are the Risks of an MRI?
MRI is considered very safe because it does not use radiation. However, there are a few important considerations:
Magnetic field risks
- Strong magnets can interfere with pacemakers, implants, or metal fragments.
- This is why the safety questionnaire is essential.
Contrast dye (if used)
- Mild nausea or headache
- Allergic reactions (very uncommon)
- Kidney‑related concerns in patients with severe kidney disease
Our radiologist will assess whether contrast is appropriate for you.
